Red Roses: England Women strike new pay deal with RFU

The Red Roses’ top stars will earn £100,000 with England in 2029 if they successfully secure the Women’s Rugby World Cup in Australia as part of a new four-year pay deal with the Rugby Football Union.

In general, it is understood that the players presented a 25 percent increase in their previous contract, which will end at the end of June.

In addition to lifting in front of a sellout crowd of 81,885 in September, England have won eight consecutive Six Nations titles and are on a 38-match winning streak.

Despite the significant increase in the new deal, they still earn less than their football and cricket counterparts.

England’s players took home a £20,000 bonus each for winning the Women’s Rugby World Cup in September, while their top stars earned around £50,000 a year at the time.

The RFU, which has plowed £24 million into top-level premiership women’s rugby over the past decade, has decided to review the new contract after two years to allow the figure to rise “if business activity in the women’s game materially exceeds expectations”.

The new deals will be split into three different bands, with the most veteran and top players earning the most. Contracts also vary in length, with some being awarded for one year and others being contracted for up to three.

A guaranteed minimum of 32 contracted Red Roses, with an announcement of which players will be dealt within the next two weeks.

Transitional contracts will continue for young prospects.

“Our goal as the Red Roses is to be the number one team in the world on and off the field,” said captain Meg Jones.

“Investment in our program and our pathways is critical to that and this is an important time for the team and the English game.

“The growth we’ve seen in recent times has been incredible, and this takes things a step further. It gives players more security, more opportunity and recognition of what it means to represent England.

“Just as important, it’s about the future – continuing to invest in a strong pipeline of players, and ensuring that the next generation has an even stronger platform and succeeds.”

The deal is the first Red Rose deal to be struck by international players’ group England Rugby, and was previously negotiated by the wider Rugby Players’ Association.
