Real Madrid are aware of their need to overhaul their squad in the upcoming summer transfer window after two disappointing seasons that saw them miss out on major trophies, but the rebuilding process faces a difficult hurdle in the form of a number of players leaving the Royals.
Salary and position
Real Madrid players enjoy high wages and huge contracts, in addition to the international status that comes with wearing the shirt of Europe’s most decorated club, which increases their marketing value and doubles their advertising revenue. Therefore, many players choose to stay even in light of their reduced participation opportunities.
Sibayos.. a prime example
Dani Ceballos is one of the clearest examples of this. The international was close to moving to Olympique de Marseille in the summer of 2025 after agreeing terms with Real Madrid, but he backed out at the last minute and opted to continue at the Santiago Bernabeu despite struggling to get regular game minutes.
Ceballos has played just 826 minutes this season, while sources close to him revealed that the salary offered by the French club was less than his current salary at Madrid, which contributed to him opting out of the deal.
Although coach Alvaro Arbeloa recently dropped him from the squad, he gave him limited minutes in the last game, a move that was interpreted as a possible farewell.
Real Madrid are looking to facilitate his departure this summer, while the player’s dream of returning to Real Betis remains without a final deal.
Kamavinga is under pressure
Eduardo Camavinga’s name also appears on the list of contenders to leave after a disappointing season in which he failed to develop as expected after joining Real Madrid.
Fans have repeatedly voiced their displeasure at his drop in form, while management believes the player still has a high market value that could fetch a significant profit if he is sold. However, the football player’s close circle confirms that he is not thinking about leaving the club.
Other names:
The list of names tipped to leave includes Ferland Mendy, who has refused to leave in 2023 despite hiring a replacement in his position, in addition to Fran Garcia, who may be looking for a bigger opportunity at left-back due to the build-up.
Ibrahim Diaz also shows no desire to leave, despite his limited appearances, while the club plan to loan out Franco Mastantuno after a modest first season.
As for Gonzalo Garcia, his departure seems likely, with Real Madrid keen to retain a percentage of his rights or include a clause to buy him back in the future.
A clear decline in sales policy
Real Madrid is no longer the club that makes huge profits from the sale of stars.
The last major sale was in the summer of 2022, when Casemiro moved to Manchester United for €70 million.
Before that, the club sold Raphael Varane and Martin Odegaard for €40 million each, in addition to Achraf Hakimi’s move to Inter Milan for €43 million.
This is in stark contrast to previous years, when the club made huge profits by selling big stars such as Cristiano Ronaldo for €100 million, Alvaro Morata for €80 million, Angel Di Maria for €75 million, in addition to Mesut Ozil for €45 million, an amount that later helped the club renew its squad and return strongly to the European podium.
