Federico Valverde suffered a head injury after an alleged altercation with Real Madrid teammate Aurelien Chawameny in the dressing room three days before their Champions League clash with rivals Barcelona.
Real later said in a statement that they had opened disciplinary proceedings against the pair “following the events that occurred in the first team’s training session this morning”.
The club also confirmed that Valverde suffered cranioencephalic trauma, a type of concussion.
“Valverde is in good condition at home and according to the medical protocols for this test, he will have to rest for 10 to 14 days,” he said.
Sources told BBC Sport that Uruguayan midfielder Valverde was knocked unconscious during the altercation, while ESPN reported that he needed stitches.
It is said that tension between the two players arose during Wednesday’s practice. Their argument reportedly continued into the dressing room, but at that point it did not go any further.
Thursday’s altercation was widely reported to have turned physical after French international Chouameny allegedly confronted Valverde after training at the club Valdebebas.
An emergency meeting was called on Thursday evening with Real president Florentino Perez and his staff, as well as head coach Alvaro Arbeloa and club captain Dani Carvajal.
In their statement, Real added: “When the relevant internal procedures are completed, the club will provide up-to-date information on the decisions of both procedures.”
BBC Sport have spoken to the club and the players’ agents for comment.
Real face Barcelona in El Clasico at Camp Nou on Sunday. Anything but a win for Real would see their rivals clinch a second successive La Liga title, with three games to go.
Spanish media say the incident has been described internally by several members of staff as “the worst ever at Valvebus”.
Reports suggest that the club has launched an investigation to find out what happened and that both players may face fines.
