RBC Canadian Open: Shane Lowry a shot off lead in Toronto after Brooks Koepka fires eight birdies Golf News

Brooks Koepka got off to his strongest start since returning to the PGA Tour, making eight birdies and two bogeys to earn a share of the lead at the Canadian Open with a six-under 64.

Ireland’s Shane Lowry is still in search of his first win of the PGA Tour season, finishing one shot off the lead at five under, but will be disappointed with his performance on the back nine, finding a single birdie on the 18th after four bogeys on the front nine of the course.

Meanwhile, David Skeens made five birdies and was the surprise leader of the English contingent at TPC Toronto, finishing one stroke off with a 65, while Tommy Fleetwood and Matt Fitzpatrick – both three-under 67s – were not far behind.

Americans Thigala, Eric Cole and Sam Burns, Canadian Matthew Anderson and Argentine Emiliano Grillo are each tied with Koepka at six under after the first round.

“I played pretty hard,” said Koepka, who left LIV Golf in December last year. “I don’t think the ball striking has been as good as of late, but it’s hard to compare. The last six months have been incredible, but it’s good to finally see the putter heating up.

“It’s nice to be back (on the PGA Tour), I’ve enjoyed it. I think the players have been very receptive. I haven’t heard (anything negative), at least nobody has said anything to my face. There’s been a lot of: ‘We’re glad you’re back’.”

“It’s been enjoyable. I know myself, my family, everyone is happy and excited to see what this next piece is.”

Alex Fitzpatrick made four birdies to end the day at two under but a double-bogey at the second prevented the Englishman from leapfrogging his brother, while PGA Championship winner Aaron Rye battled back, making three bogeys en route to a one-under 69.

2023 Canadian Open winner and home crowd favorite Nick Taylor made a costly bogey on the 17th but is still in contention at three under.
