Rapper Mystikal has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for third degree rape.

In March, the US singer was born Michael Tyler pleaded guilty to the chargehe was originally charged with first degree rape, as well as robbery, theft, domestic violence and false imprisonment.

The victim, who has not been named, told the court that Tyler punched and choked her, tore off her wristbands and sexually assaulted her as he locked her in his Louisiana home. She said they took her phone and car keys to prevent her from leaving and sent money to herself from her phone before letting her go.

Before sentencing, Tyler told the court: “If I do this to you, I deserve a serious punishment.”

His plea is said to be part of a deal that reduced the overall charge, which if convicted would have meant life in prison.

A week after the verdict, however, Tyler tried to answer his request in the files he says “he was under a lot of stress and was forced to make a quick decision”. The petition was dismissed by the court.

In 2004, Tyler was sentenced to six years in prison after being found guilty of sexual assault and kidnapping, a conviction that resulted in him registering as a sex offender.

In 2012, he was jailed for three months after being arrested for domestic violence, for which he was given five years probation from his previous prison sentence. In 2017, he was charged with rape and robbery and spent 18 months in prison before the charges were dismissed.

Mystikal had a big hit in 2000 with Shake Ya Ass. He released an album that year, Let’s Get Ready, which made No 1 on the US chart. He has not released any music in the last ten years and his last album was Tarantula in 2001.
