Rangers: Will Derek McInnes be ‘perfect fit’ at Ibrox?

Few people know McInnes better than Docherty, who worked with him for more than a decade at St Johnstone and Aberdeen.

The former Dundee boss believes McInnes’ competitive edge will help Rangers take on Celtic – particularly – towards the end of the season.

When the split came up last season, Rangers were in second place, a point behind Hearts and ahead of Celtic. Rohl said his team had “five cup finals” to play and they lost four of them to finish a distant third.

Questions about Rangers’ mentality have come up over the years, and Docherty believes McInnes’ edge could help resolve them.

“Derek is a very competitive person,” he added. “You saw last year, when people thought his team was going to disappear.

“Purely through him and the recruiting he did was competitive.

“I have no doubt having that edge and having played at Rangers and having that affinity with the club, it will be a great appointment.

“It’s that mentality, you saw a lot of it last year. You saw it in his career, with Brendan Rodgers’ Aberdeen team finishing second to Celtic.

“And last year, every time Hearts was shut down they would come up on Trump.”

Former Rangers and Dundee striker Rory Loy believes Rohl moving on and McInnes coming in would be the “perfect scenario” at Ibrox.

“To think three or four weeks ago, some Rangers supporters – because of the fallout after the split – wanted him (Rohl) off,” he told the Scottish Football Podcast.

“To get money for him and use that money to sign Derek McInnes, I don’t think it could have gone down any more favorably for Rangers.

“The thing that Derek McInnes will bring above all is what has been leveled at Rangers over the last decade – that’s between the ears, that’s the mentality.”
