Rangers set for ‘summer of change’ as Cavenagh backs Rohl

The club has splurged a relative fortune in the transfer market. Last season they finished second with 75 points. This year it was 72 points and third.

In the past four seasons their points total has dropped year over year – 92, 85, 75 and now 72.

“The way I look at it, it’s binary again,” Cavenaugh said of dropping from second to third. “You either win a title or you don’t. And so this season, again, is not a success because we didn’t win a title.

“I’m not going to spend any time parsing points in every match, second, third, it doesn’t matter. We didn’t win and all we care about is winning.”

One area where it matters is qualifying for a shot at the Champions League. Rangers also failed to do so. How can the club get behind spending so much money?

“I don’t look at it backwards,” Cavenagh said. “I understand the math you did, but we didn’t win. And so it’s just the same.

“When we look at what we have spent, when we look at our squad, we think we have good players, but we still don’t have a good team. And so our focus is to build a good team.

“You can be disappointed, angry, frustrated, upset, all these things. But all those things end today. And tomorrow we make up.”

Cavenagh Circus was addressed by outgoing captain James Tavernier, an 11-year veteran at Ibrox, who was due to bid farewell to Ibrox against Hibernian last Wednesday.

Rohl opted to bench Tavernier rather than allow him to lead the team – and chaos ensued, with Tavernier withdrawing from the squad.

“Tav is a Hall of Famer at the club and we hold him in the highest regard,” Cavenagh said. “If we look at the events of Wednesday night, I don’t think any of us will look back and think it was the right look for the club.

“My vision is always going to be the club and the most important thing we can do to make sure the club looks good. But as I said, it’s water under the bridge, that’s it.

“Nothing is going to change our opinion of Tav and we assume we’ll have a great relationship with him going forward. The way I see it is that it should have been handled in-house because it’s not a good look.

“It’s unfortunate that it played out the way it did. We’ll all look back and say we could have done things differently but it’s beyond us and we’re moving on.”

Can he give any assurances to fans that things will be much better next season?

“Our first focus is recruitment. We have to improve the squad and that’s not just bringing in players with certain skills in certain positions, it’s bringing in a certain mentality. That’s the number one thing by far.”
