Rahul Dravid: India legend open to coaching despite ETPL ownership as England look for new Test coach


Former India coach Rahul Dravid says he is open to a coaching role despite a bid for franchise ownership.

Dravid became Co-owner of the Dublin Guardian In the inaugural edition of the European Twenty20 Premier League (ETPL) which is being held later this summer.

The 53-year-old played 164 Tests and 344 one-day internationals for India and coached their national team from 2021 to 2024.

Dravid told BBC Sport that he would “definitely” be interested in coaching if some “good opportunity comes up”.

“This league is only one month a year, so I think that was the exciting part of it, trying to do something different for a month,” said Dravid.

“Of course there will be times before and after where I have to give some of my time and energy to ETPL and I am committed to that.

“But it also frees up a lot of the year for me and I’ll definitely be … if something exciting comes up coaching or any other side of things, we’ll take it as it goes.”

After the decision to sack Brendon McCullum, England have started the search for a new Test coach Aim to have a new man 19 August before the start of the three-Test series against Pakistan.

The ETPL will be played from August 26 to September 20 with the first edition taking place in The Hague and Dublin.

It will pose a dilemma for Dravid, who is widely respected in coaching circles and regarded as one of the game’s deep thinkers, if he emerges as a surprise contender to succeed McCullum.

Dravid has won 14, lost seven and drawn three out of 24 matches in charge of India’s Test team and guided them to the finals of the 2023 World Test Championship.

His most recent stint was as the head coach of Rajasthan Royals for the 2025 edition of the Indian Premier League.
