Raheem Sterling has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs after he crashed his car on the highway.
The former England winger, who most recently played for Feyenoord in the Dutch Eredivisie, is suspected of crashing his Lamborghini on the M3 in Hampshire on Thursday morning.
The 31-year-old has been released on bail pending further enquiries.
Hampshire Police said in a statement that just before 9am on Thursday we received reports of a Lamborghini crashing into barriers on the south bound of the M3 near the Minley interchange.
“No other vehicles were involved and there were no injuries.
“The driver, a 31-year-old man from Berkshire, has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving, dangerous driving, possession of a Class C drug and failing to provide a specimen. He has been released on bail pending our enquiries.”
A source close to Sterling confirmed the arrest, but told BBC Sport there was “no confirmation” in the system.
The source added that the player had had a “tough couple of years” and was left “feeling worthless” and “forgotten”.
Sterling joined Feyenoord in February, left Chelsea in January and stayed until the end of the season, making only 8 appearances in the Netherlands.
He left the Blues by mutual consent after agreeing a deal worth more than £300,000 with the Stamford Bridge club in the final 18 months of his contract.
In four years at Chelsea – including a season-long loan at Arsenal – he made 59 league appearances after signing from Manchester City in 2022.
He began his senior career with City at Liverpool before moving to Manchester in 2015, where he won four Premier League titles.
Sterling has made 82 appearances for England, most recently in the 2022 World Cup win in Qatar.
