Ferry may not be well known outside British tennis circles but sport is a big part of his family’s life – his mother Olivia was a professional player, his father Loic is the owner of Ligue 1 football club Lorient.
As a teenager, Ferry chose to earn a scholarship to Stanford University in California and also played college tennis.
Before recording what he described as his “best result” of the season against veteran Frenchman Mannarino, he lost just two games to his compatriot Toby Samuel in the opening round.
He and Cerundolo both got off to a nervous start, creating several break point opportunities, but Ferry managed to serve for the set at 5-4.
However, Cerundolo won the next three games and dominated in penalty kicks, while Ferry’s only point was a double fault from his opponent.
Cerundolo broke to start the second set, but Ferri suddenly sent a volley straight down his throat at the net.
The Argentinian fell to the ground and Ferri leapt over the net to see him through – and Cerudolo nearly hit Ferri with the winner on the next point as the pair shared a wry smile.
But from then on, Cerundolo’s serve was lost, and Ferry returned level before breaking to serve for the set.
A lovely serve and volley from Ferry to force a deciding set proved to be the winner, and a devastating double fault from Cerudolo gave the Brits the first impetus.
But Cerundolo’s experience showed that he put enough pressure on his opponents that he was able to bounce back first and secure a victory on the ferry serve.
