Hundreds have gathered in a Texas city, demanding justice for the fatal shooting of a 52-year-old Mexican man.

Hundreds of protesters have demonstrated in the city of Houston in the United States demanding justice for Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a Mexican man who was shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) investigator on July 7.

The protesters marched from Ervan Chew Park on Sunday and briefly blocked the bridge on Dunlavy Street, according to local media and videos posted online, carrying signs that read, “Get rid of ICE” and “Justice for Lorenzo”.

Salgado Araujo, a 52-year-old Mexican national, was shot by an ICE agent as he drove his construction crew to a job site in Houston, south Texas. The protests come amid intense scrutiny of US President Donald Trump.

According to the Associated Press, encounters with ICE have killed at least 10 people since Trump’s second term last year. Two of these occurred within days of Salgado Araujo’s murder, in the states of Maine and Florida.

After the Houston shooting, ICE said Salgado Araujo tried to rob an agent who fired his weapon in self-defense. But a statement issued Thursday by the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Texas made no mention of any collision between Salgado Araujo’s car and the law enforcement vehicle, nor did he say that the officer was in fear of his life.

In a video posted online by the Party for Socialism and Liberation, a campaign group, an activist on Sunday’s March called for further protests to shut down the city.

“We need to show ICE, the Trump administration and the rest of the country that Houston has not been compromised,” the protester said.

“We cannot sit here and allow ICE to hunt down and kill many of our daughters, our brothers, our uncles. If we want justice, we have to force it,” he said.

The official said the “shutdown” of Houston will take place on Friday, July 24.

Sunday’s protests followed similar rallies across the country on Saturday, including in Portland, Maine — where, days earlier, Joan Sebastian Duran Guerrero, a 26-year-old Colombian man, was shot dead while parked in Biddeford.

On Saturday, the Duran Guerrero family paid tribute to the father of the three-year-old girl, telling Telemundo reporters that he still has “many dreams to fulfill”.
