Powerful Armenia says Sunday’s election – which Moscow has accused of influencing – was marred by ‘absenteeism’.

The Russian-backed party Strong Armenia has asked Armenia’s election commission to cancel the results of Sunday’s parliamentary election due to “non-tracking of votes”.

Aram Vardevanyan of the opposition coalition told reporters in the capital of Yerevan that the request was made on Friday, saying that a victory what was said by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan the Civil Contract party should not be allowed to stand, even if there are limits.

The ruling party, which has strengthened ties with European countries since coming to power in 2018, won 49.8 percent of the vote. Stronger Armenia won 23.2 percent in the June 7 election, pledging to maintain Armenia’s close ties with Russia.

On Thursday, Armenia’s Central Election Commission declared protests at two polling stations illegal due to the presence of soldiers at polling stations after polls closed.

Opposition groups have also complained about the number of arrests of their representatives and supporters before the polls.

The international election monitoring group, despite allegations of vote-buying and other electoral violations, said voting went well in most polling stations.

Analysts have criticized Russia for spreading disinformation online and pro-Kremlin news that portrays the Western alliance as dangerous.

Russia has military bases in the mountainous Caucasus country and is one of Yerevan’s trading partners.

Before the vote, Russia’s agricultural watchdog suspended imports of seafood from Armenia, an important economic sector that exports 30 percent of its goods to Russia.

Restrictions were also imposed on Armenian flowers, mineral water and alcohol. The trade ban is a well-known way that Moscow is not happy with the former territories.

The European Union accused Russia of trying to disrupt Armenia’s economy in order to interfere in the elections.

The Election Commission is expected to publish the final results on Sunday.
