South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) president Alejandro Dominguez has surprised sporting circles by announcing that the 2030 World Cup will witness a historic expansion to include 64 teams.

The World Cup historically featured 16 teams before it was expanded to 24 teams in 1982 and then to 32 teams from the 1998 edition, while the 2026 edition will be the largest ever with 48 teams.

These developments come at a time when the tournament will witness a unique system where Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay will play individual matches while the rest of the tournament is jointly hosted by Morocco, Portugal and Spain.

It is certain that this potential expansion of the tournament to 64 teams will have a direct and inevitable impact on the World Cup selection system.

The president of the International Football Federation (FIFA), Gianni Infantino, has already hinted at the idea, saying that they will “look into the matter” after the release in the United States of America, Canada and Mexico.

Infantino said: “When organizing the World Cup, it is important that we organize it for the whole world, not just for Europe and South America, but really for the whole world. Every country should be allowed to dream of participating in the World Cup.”
