Preprint server arXiv will restrict submissions to AI-generated content

Artificial intelligence has appeared everywhere, including in peer-reviewed literature. Fake posts, unedited answers, and useless pictures both have changed in the past and peer reviewers, and it is not always clear if there are consequences for the people in charge.

Now, it appears that several scientific fields have been establishing rules to prevent problems caused by AI even before peer review or journals. One of the contributors to the physics and astronomy preprint server arXiv used a social media thread to announce that any inappropriate AI-generated content submitted to the server would be subject to a one-year ban and a permanent requirement that future publications be peer-reviewed before arXiv accepts them.

Thomas Dietterich, in addition to being a professor emeritus at Oregon State University, has been deeply involved with arXiv, serving advisory council it’s his group moderation. So they have an opportunity to understand the organization’s policies, although we have reached out to arXiv leadership to confirm, but we have not yet received a response.

In a Thread on X (also Photo taken on Blueskyfor those who don’t have X accounts), Dietterich described the new system as coming directly from arXiv’s. standards of self-control. “Contents submitted to arXiv must follow appropriate standards of scholarly communication in format, including appropriate and well-organized sections, figures, tables, references, etc.,” those standards read. “Good planning and preparation is essential.”
