But points expected (xPTS) are important to soccer analysts because they serve as a good indicator of a team’s underperformance or failure over the course of a season.

Expected points are calculated by comparing the quality of goal chances (xG) and the number of goals scored (xGA) that a team has in each match of the campaign to show what effect it may have on the team’s total score.

In theory, it measures how strong a team’s offensive and defensive performance was.
