Portuguese Pedro Gonsalves, coach of the Royal Army

The Portuguese coach is starting a new experience in Morocco after his success with the Young Africans

The Royal Moroccan Army announced the official signing of Portuguese coach Pedro Gonçalves to take over the technical leadership of the main team, with his contract extended by two seasons, replacing compatriot Alexandre Santos.

Gonsalves arrives at the Royal Army after a varied coaching career on the African continent, which began with a few years at Portugal’s Sporting Lisbon academy, before he took charge of Angola’s First August Academy and then enjoyed remarkable success with Angola’s Sunni teams.

The Portuguese coach led Angola’s U-17 team before coaching the U-20 youth team, where he contributed to writing a remarkable page in the history of Angolan football through his results with the national teams.

He also had experience with Tanzania’s young Africans, and despite his departure before the end of last season, he helped the team win the Tanzanian league title, in addition to the Mapinduzi Cup.

Gonsalves now embarks on a new challenge with one of Morocco’s and Africa’s biggest clubs, as Royal Army has a record of achievements that includes one African Champions League title, 13 Moroccan League championships, in addition to 12 Throne Cup titles.

The importance of this move is not limited to the historic status of the club, but also extends to the football environment in which it operates, as Morocco is one of the most prominent football powers on the African continent, given the huge investments the football sector has witnessed in recent years, in addition to the ongoing preparations to host the 2030 World Cup in Spain and Portugal.

It is noteworthy that Royal Army finished fourth in the Moroccan League last season with 55 points, while Moghreb Fes was crowned champion.
