Meit’s not exactly what anyone imagines their first time. Sequel to Richard Gadd’s Reindeer Baby, harming the BBC drama Half Manis full of disturbing events but nothing like the opening episode, when rebellious teenager Ruben arranges for his younger brother Niall to lose his virginity.
It makes for one of those TV moments that is impossible to get right on your sofa. But which ones are the most confusing of all time? From badass jumps to DIY dentistry, here’s our pick of the 15 photos that made us cringe, cringe and watch our toes…
As a twist of thanks for helping him pass his first exam, young Ruben (Stuart Campbell) brings home girlfriend Mona (Charlotte Blackwood). When they catch little Niall (Mitchell Robertson) “walking around” in their bedroom, Ruben encourages Mona to switch beds with Niall’s pie, while Ruben watches over her, offering words of encouragement and at one point, a steady hand. And lo and behold – a lifelong toxic bond is formed.
“Yes, pig!” A notable episode of the second season saw the inner circle of Roy’s family on a hunt in Hungary. Patriarch Logan (Brian Cox) is furious that someone is taking out the company, so he subjects Greg, Tom and Karl to a ritual of shame as punishment for “disloyalty together”. The bully leader humiliated his subordinates by making them sit on all fours, play pig-like and fight with sausages. Logan’s terrible grief was not evident. Karl stole Tom’s sausage, however.
It was like being in an awkward HR meeting. He was too busy being a cool entertainer to do real work, so it should come as no surprise when Wernham Hogg decided to fire Slough branch manager David Brent (Ricky Gervais). His removal took a turn for the worse when he tearfully pleaded with them. The pain is sweetened by Brent coming out from behind the desk to reveal that he’s riding an ostrich (well, that. he was Red Nose Day).
It’s #nonsense. After David Cameron became embroiled in the “Piggate” controversy of 2015, Black Mirror creator Charlie Brooker was widely praised as a standout, having arrived there four years ago. His first dystopian anthology story, The National Anthem, saw a prime minister (Rory Kinnear) face a pig of choice: allow a kidnapped royal child to be tortured and killed, or sleep with a pig on TV. Attempts to save the daughter or make the footage failed, the PM reluctantly acted. Brooker assured us (and Cameron) that: “It’s a coincidence, although it’s very surprising.”
It was the most intense period of violence to date, showing that HBO’s post-apocalyptic saga is going to be amazing. In the fifth episode, Gladys (Marceline Hugot) – a loyal member of the silent group Guilty Remnant – was dragged to the forest by invisible assailants, painted on a tree and stoned. Gladys broke her vow of silence and asked them to stop. They did not listen to him.
Lena Dunham has never been afraid to “go there” and this visceral look was one of the most heartbreaking Girls. Plagued by OCD and anxiety, Hannah Horvath (Dunham) stands in front of the mirror, frantically washing her ear. He pushed on the cotton and kept pushing until it stuck. He screamed in pain and was taken to the hospital with blood coming out of his ear canal, explaining how he felt air coming out of his pierced ear. Dunham tweeted: “If all I’ve done on Earth is scare you into not using Q-tips, I’ll die happy and purposeful.”
Ryan Murphy’s jukebox musical comedy was a huge hit, running for six series. More impressive when you consider Spanish coach and glee team leader Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison) crossed more lines than a zebra barber. He recorded Young MC’s Bust A Move and Kanye’s Gold Digger, the latter with a dad dance. They gave Britney’s Toxic performances to a large number of high school students. This is before they have sex in the school bathroom and plant drugs to destroy the students so they can join the choir. How did he do it and Glee give up everything? The man was dangerous.
Shane Meadows and Jack Thorne’s masterly miniseries had one of the most gut-wrenching satires in miniseries history – and one of the worst sequels. Trev (Danielle Watson) was raped by her friend’s abusive father Mick (Johnny Harris). When his stepson Lol (Vicky McClure) confronts him, Mick tries to rape him again but Lol kills him with a hammer. Skinhead Combo (Stephen Graham) voluntarily took the fall and was arrested. When Combo was released following This is England ’90, it made for a disappointing dinner as the disturbing truth came out.
More relative sex. In a heavy-hitting remix of Half Man, the spa satire’s Koh Samui-set third season saw nepo-douche Saxon Ratliff (Patrick Schwarzenegger) chasing his shy younger brother Lochlan (Sam Nivola) into bed. After leaving molly at a full moon party, the siblings share a kiss, before Lockie sleeps with Chloe’s ex (Charlotte Le Bon) – as she “reached out” to Saxon. The next day, Saxon is desperate. Schwarzenegger admitted that the footage was “unpleasant to watch with my family”. Piper, stop!
The most painful display of dental technology since Marathon Man. When KGB agent Elizabeth Jennings (Keri Russell) pokes her head into a car with the Feds, she hits her mouth and her tooth starts to hurt. Knowing that the FBI is monitoring dental surgeries, she locks eyes with her husband Philip (Matthew Rhys). Without saying anything, he knew what to do. Hiding in the laundry room of their house so the kids wouldn’t hear, they threw back some whiskey and pulled out the DIY and pliers. At intervals, they held, shook, sighed and cried. Some fans found it strange. Indeed, the showrunners originally planned for the couple to sleep later. After drawing a cathartic toothpick, he realized it was adulterous enough.
Non-binary comedian Che Diaz (Sara Ramirez) ruined the Sex and the City sequel for many fans. He also helped destroy Carrie’s blankets. While Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) was entertained by Che in the kitchen, a bedridden Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) – who was recovering from hip surgery – needed help going to the bathroom. With Miranda agreeing, Carrie finished wetting the bed. Find the dating section from there.
Not so much an event as a challenge. In the fourth episode of That’s My Dog, lonely David Fisher (Michael C Hall) picks up the horseman Jake (Michael Weston), who turns out to be crazy. David is soon carjacked and forced to climb out of hell where he is beaten, tied up, threatened with guns, forced to smoke crack and doused with gasoline. As Jake became less and less immobile, it was as if the audience was caught up in it too.
Peep Show is best known for its comedy challenges, and this one was always there. At Mark’s stag do in Shropshire, Jeremy (Robert Webb) accidentally hits a pet dog. Naturally, he tried his best to cover up the tragedy by roasting the beloved Terrier Mummy, before eating it in front of his owner. He nearly convinced everyone that what he was hiding in his bag was roast beef. Well, until they noticed the hair on it. It’s a collar. “It’s just turkey,” Jez said, chewing deeply. “Uncooked turkey, dirty.”
Talk about eye watering. In the second season of the satirical western, saloon owner Al Swearen (Ian McShane) was suffering from kidney problems, sweating and shaking in bed, while prostitutes opened fire on his forehead. Shaky-handed Doc Cochran (Brad Dourif) was on the verge of life-threatening surgery when he made a last-ditch attempt to remove the “magleets” naturally. Everyone pulled Al to his feet and yelled at him to pee. Tragically, blood and kidney stones came out of him. Al had a small stroke during this time. You didn’t hear that in Lovejoy.
Every young man has nightmares. The second season of Netflix’s Sex Drama opens with hormonal hero Otis (Asa Butterfield) masturbating in various locations, set to a cover of I Touch Myself by the Divinyls. It, ahem, culminated with him doing the same thing in the parking lot — except Jean’s mother (Gillian Anderson) forgot her purse and returned to see her son climbing out the window. Time to visit the car wash and talk a little, honey…
