Pictures from Friendship Review – one platonic date that will melt your heart | Theater

Memagine like One Day was founded in Long Eaton. Now, take his love story, long overdue, but make it platonic, and about the best of theater. It’s the basis of Jane Upton’s brilliant, heart-pounding drama, which takes Jess and Billy through a series of scenes in their relationship.

Starting in the early 90s, in their school days, then going through the 20s, 30s and into the mid-40s, the game combines teenage breakups, career decisions, family breakups, births and children. Jess (Katie Redford) is a sharer of information while Billy (Benedict Salter) has secrets. Their early years together are filled with rehearsals, parties, personal revelations and infidelities, but even at their lowest point, the two always pull each other’s back.

When their lives go in different directions, Billy goes to London for drama school and then builds a career as a pilot, and Jess lives at home “in the suburbs” before returning to nature as a playwright, they turn their noses at the other’s decisions. However, in times of chaos, they have no choice but to pick up the phone or run across the country to find their old friend. Their dialogues are good for people who know each other in their lives. When their conversation tips into cruelty, I’m disgusted.

Directed by Hannah Stone, the production portrays friendship as a defining factor. Redford and Salter are making their characters into characters we want to be with for years to come. In fact, time is now slipping through our fingers. Sometime at age 15 in 1995, Jess is receiving advice from More! magazines; the next is 2022, and 42-year-old Billy is thinking about having his next child. Abby Clarke’s design evokes nostalgia, a back wall made of white circles, framed by Polaroids that transform from photo to mirror. The installation screams: how does everything go so fast?

With so much life to fit into 95 minutes, there are inevitable gaps in Billy and Jess’ stories. We can learn more about their family structure and other relationships in their lives. But really, it’s a drama about a complicated, beautiful relationship between two people. It makes you desperate for days with them.
