Phil Foden: The Manchester City midfielder has signed a new four-year contract

Foden has spent his entire City career under Guardiola, alongside John Stones and Bernardo Silva as City’s most decorated player.

Foden scored a career-high 27 goals and 12 assists in City’s treble-winning season.

The following two seasons proved fruitless, with Foden’s role at the City side changing.

Last season, the likes of Jeremy Doku and Antoine Semenyo kept striker Erling Haaland out of the game, while Ryan Cherky prefers to play in a more attacking role.

That means Foden rarely works deep, which limits his killer passing and goal-scoring potential.

Last season, Foden scored seven goals in 33 Premier League games and provided five assists, while the previous season he scored seven goals in 28 Premier League games and provided two assists.

The Professional Footballers’ Association spoke out after Tuchel was left out of the World Cup squad this summer. Foden was a “victim”. Football’s packed schedule, he said, “isn’t what we saw two years ago.”
