England’s Jordan Smith holds the weekend lead at the Charles Schwab Challenge after back-to-back rounds of 65 with two rounds to go and tops the leaderboard at 10 under par.
Smith turned in an impressive performance with an eagle on the par-five first hole, four birdies and a bogey on the 14th to give him a one-stroke lead in Texas and put him well on his way to a first PGA Tour victory.
The trailing pack has four players tied for second at nine-under, including Hideki Matsuyama, who tied Smith’s 65 on the day. Canadian AJ Ewart moved up the rankings with a course-best 63 with a remarkable hole-in-one on the 16th, putting him three strokes off the lead.

“I’m obviously very happy,” said Smith, who holds the 36-hole lead for the first time on the PGA Tour. “(I’m) going into the weekend in a good position.
“The putting has been hot the last two days, which is nice to see. The swing still doesn’t feel 100 percent but we’re hitting a lot of fairways and a lot of greens, which is the key here. We’ll take the opportunities when we get them.
“When we miss the green, most of the time we miss it in the right spot and leave ourselves an easy chip shot.

“That’s a strength of my game here, hitting a lot of fairways and greens. So we’ll try and do the same thing over the weekend, go with the same game plan and attack those pins when we can.”
Elsewhere, Alex Smalley is the only bogey-free player so far and sits two shots off the lead from Smith, while defending champion Ben Griffin is six strokes back after four birdies and two bogeys.
