Tisza’s Magyar party has gained a majority in parliament.
Updated on May 9, 2026
Hungary’s new prime minister has been officially sworn in, nearly a month after sweeping his predecessor, Viktor Orban, in parliamentary elections that ended his 16-year rule.
Peter Magyar, 45, who heads the centre-right Tisza party, came into office promising a turnaround after years of economic crisis and strained relations with Orban’s allies.
Magyar urged the Hungarian people to “enter the gate of the regime change”.
His party won a majority in parliament, winning 141 of the 199 seats.
This is a growing issue. More to follow…
