In an unusual move, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez decided to take on the process of selecting a new coach himself, implicitly acknowledging past mistakes that have cost the Royals an entire title-less season amid a hotly contested race for big international names.
“Admit the mistake”

As for Arbeloa, who replaced Alonso as interim replacement, he has weathered the storm despite his inability to win any titles. True, he produced emphatic victories over Diego Simeone, Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho and nearly knocked Bayern down, but the collective collapse that followed revealed the reality of the “uncoachable team” as the media described it.
The right coach
Despite the setbacks, Perez remains confident in the current squad and believes that the next coach should make the most of it without the need for a major overhaul of the squad.
Reinforcements will be limited to two or three signings (midfielder or defender), while the starting line-up has been decided in more than half of its positions.
Thibaut Courtois is in goal, Trent Alexander-Arnold is at right back, and Antonio Rudiger is close to a renewal.
There are untouchables: Aurelien Chouami, Federico Valverde, Jude Bellingham, Vinicius Junior and Kylian Mbappe.

Jose Mourinho saw his fortunes rise after he contacted members of the club to clarify the situation, before Benfica moved to make him a fresh offer.
The German option is also a potential surprise at Valdebebas, similar to Barcelona’s experience with Hans Flick, and names include Jurgen Klopp, Julian Nagelsmann and even Sebastian Hoeness.
There are national team coaches, such as Mauricio Pochettino, with whom there have been contacts in the past, Didier Deschamps or Lionel Scalloni, which will depend on what happens in the 2026 World Cup.
No revolution in the team… but a revolution in management?
Weeks ago, the Royals denied reports of a possible reinstatement of the sporting director position, which would have seen some of the current names leave the administrative structure.
