The new justice secretary, Alex Norris, urged a reconsideration of the previously released plan after being appointed by Andy Burnham on Monday.
Asked about the reports that the Prime Minister is working to exempt the brave and those who nurse children from the plan, the spokesperson said, “The government is fully focused on protecting the safety of the people.”
“We have no choice but to take decisive action to fix the problems in our prisons. I will not speculate on possible policy changes.”
“Of course the prime minister makes decisions on all policy areas, including how we get justice for victims.”
Aileen O’Connor, chairman of the Thames Valley Police Federation, said: “PC Andrew Harper’s killers should be put where they belong… behind bars.
“Police across the Thames Valley – and indeed the country – are disgusted when these beautiful lowlifes are allowed to roam the streets freely.
“These killers have never shown any remorse for their horrific and murderous actions that night.
“Andrew’s wife, Lisi, and his entire family are serving life sentences. The least we can hope for is that the killers serve their full sentences. Even if it’s poor.”
She added that they will meet with the Police Minister, the Home Secretary and the Prime Minister.
“We will not stop. Andrew deserves nothing less,” O’Connor said.
“What message does this send about the value of a police officer’s life? The government and the parole board need to reconsider any plans to release Andrew’s killers early. And they need to do it now. No. No.
