Paul McCartney performed the Beatles’ No. 1 favorite I Want to Hold Your Hand for the first time in 60 years at the wedding of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce.
McCartney performed the number at a star-studded reception at Madison Square Garden in New York on Friday, People magazine reported. The song was the Beatles’ first American No 1, which started Beatlemania in the US and the success of the British bands called the “British invasion”.
The Beatles performed this song for the last time in September 1964 at the Paramount theater in New York. McCartney has not performed in public since.
“After the ceremony, Taylor’s mother, Andrea, called everyone into the lobby as the stage was set up,” an unnamed source told People, adding that former Fleetwood Mac singer Stevie Nicks also performed.
McCartney, 84, and Swift, 36, appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone together in 2020 and have been showing their love ever since. McCartney attended one of Swift’s Eras Tour concerts at Wembley Stadium in June 2024, where she was greeted by fans.
Two years later, Swift attended McCartney’s intimate concert at the Fonda Theater in Los Angeles. He recently shared an Instagram post from McCartney about his new album, Dungeon Lane Boyspraising him as a “very special artist” who “didn’t encourage him”.
A few days earlier, McCartney was asked during an interview if he could give Swift any advice on how to navigate international fame. “You see the similarities, you know the popularity and the level of popularity,” he told BBC Sounds. “Worldwide fame there Taylor Swift he has what we had, but i don’t think he needs any advice, to be honest.
McCartney said that if Swift were to ask him for advice, she would “oblige”. He said: “I am like a brother of that generation, or even like the grandchildren.”
He also said he met Swift and other young actresses including Billie Eilish, Olivia Rodrigo and Sabrina Carpenter at parties hosted by his wife, Nancy Shevell, and daughter Stella. “They are very nice people, they are very nice,” he said. I love their words. If they want any advice, I’d be happy to give it to them, but I don’t think they do.
The Beatles released I Want to Hold Your Hand in 1963 and it became the world’s best-selling single, selling more than 12m copies. The song would have gone to the top of the UK charts on the day of its release if it had been eclipsed by the Beatles’ first million-selling single, She Loves You.
But I Want To Hold Your Hand soon climbed the charts, staying at No 1 for five weeks, including Christmas, and remaining in the UK top 50 for 21 weeks.
