Passengers say ‘it’s not contagious’ after the first death on a cruise ship infected with the virus

A video shot by a passenger on board the MV Hondius shows the captain passing away from “natural causes” of the man who died there.

The captain of a cruise ship hit by the hantavirus can be seen telling passengers on April 12 that a doctor said the person was “not contagious.”

Three confirmed and five suspected cases of hantavirus — a rare but often serious disease transmitted by rodents — have since been identified.

Turkish YouTuber Ruhi Kenet told the BBC that no safety precautions were taken at the time.

About 150 people from 23 countries were arrested on board the ship near Cape Verde on the west coast of Africa.

Oceanwide Voyages, the cruise ship operator, told the BBC that the first report of hantavirus came “after disembarking from St Helena” and that “we reported in our press updates” that the first case of hantavirus was identified on May 4.
