Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has announced elections for the first time in 20 years.

President of Palestine Mahmoud Abbas has announced that parliamentary elections will be held at the end of November, with his government under international pressure to ensure its legitimacy.

Abbas issued a decree on Thursday announcing an election date of November 28 in all Palestinian territories, including the occupied West Bank, occupied East Jerusalem and Gaza.

If the vote goes ahead, it will be the first in 20 years.

“France, Saudi Arabia and others want to see changes and what they call reforms in the Palestinian Authority to provide much-needed aid,” Odeh added.

There are several issues that need to be resolved before the elections. Israel, which has not publicly commented on the announcement, is expected to allow Palestinians to vote in East Jerusalem.
