Osaka and Sabalenka had already clashed three times in 2026, with the Belarusian winning on the hard courts of Indian Wells and clay in Madrid and Roland Garros.
But the 28-year-old’s quest for a 15th consecutive Grand Slam quarterfinal came to an abrupt halt.
Sabalenka has lost in the semifinals three times in the past at Wimbledon and has never reached the final.
The people of Belarus suffered a mysteriously lost to Diana Shnaider in the French Open quarterfinals and this was another painful result for a player with a history of unexpected losses.
Osaka was broken in the third game of the first set with a backhand that hit Sabalenka.
A fierce burst from the start, Osaka rocked Sabalenka until the Belarusian screamed in agony after breaking for the second time.
Known for her ability to fight against the wind, Sabalenka could not finish the song and left the court to rest before the start of the second set.
Sabalenka repeatedly hit the racquet on her head as Osaka took a break. She won her last 21 Grand Slams, but Osaka did not panic, she managed to win and do well.
