OpenAI’s Director of AGI Deployment, Fidji Simo, is stepping down

Simo joined OpenAI’s management team in March 2024. The following year, CEO Sam Altman hired him to take over the company’s business and business operations to focus on the company’s research and data center. Previously, Simo was the CEO of Instacart and head of the Facebook program at Meta.

Shortly before starting at OpenAI, Simo experienced another health crisis. He was diagnosed with postural tachycardia syndrome, or POTS, in 2019. “Throughout my time here, I’ve put off medical tests and new medications to focus on work and never miss a day,” told OpenAI staff in a memo back in April, announcing his temporary departure. “Now it’s clear that I’ve gone too far and I need to try new ways to restore my health.”

News of Simo’s medical leave comes amid a major shake-up that saw Brad Lightcap, former COO of OpenAI, transition to director of special operations. OpenAI’s president and co-founder Greg Brockman they took over OpenAI’s business model. Earlier on Thursday, OpenAI unveiled the biggest changes to ChatGPT since its release. The company implemented an AI assistant at ChatGPT that can take actions on behalf of users, move local files and code, and update the interface of its desktop application. With the update, OpenAI hopes to offer ChatGPT users some features that were only available in Codex, such as the ability to create custom AI projects.
