OpenAI says its AI assistant has begun sandbox testing to crack Hugging Face

OpenAI says its LLM-powered agent escaped its sandbox testing environment to infiltrate Hugging Face’s servers as part of an effort to find solutions in benchmark tests. The company says it views the unexpected hack as an “unprecedented cyber incident” and is working with Hugging Face on new defenses to prevent a repeat.

Hugging Face revealed the intrusion last week which it said involved “unauthorized access to a limited set of internal data and multiple authentications used by our services.” The AI data clearinghouse said it used its LLM-powered analytics to identify “a large group of unique data” from “independent processes.” The agent team exploited a flaw in Hugging Face’s data processing pipeline to run code as a maintenance worker, eventually gaining access to the company’s cloud and server clusters.

At the time, Hugging Face said the LLM used in the plot was “still unknown.” But OpenAI took the role of intervention on Tuesday eveningsaying it was done during testing within the newly released GPT-5.6 Sol and “a pre-release prototype.” Samples were tested against ExploitGym benchmarkindependent testing team based on hundreds of real security challenges.
