One of Meta’s biggest legal readings has just come to an end

After behind-to-behind losing in a trial against its effects on youth health, Meta just ended what was supposed to be his next battle with Kentucky’s Breathitt County School District. Google’s YouTube, Snap, and TikTok all recently settled similar claims filed by the school district, which sought money from the companies to pay for the cost of dealing with social media issues.

The trial was originally scheduled to begin in June bellwether trial in federal multidistrict litigation (MDL), which includes complaints from school districts, state attorneys general, and social media litigants. It is similar to the group of cases that are going through the California state court in Los Angeles, where a the first bellwether case in that category recently. The idea is that testing a sample of cases before the jury will inform the discussion of the larger container of the remaining cases.

The details of the settlement with the Breathitt County School District were not disclosed, but plaintiffs’ attorneys Lexi Hazam, Previn Warren, Chris Seeger and Ronald Johnson said in a statement, “We are still seeking justice for the 1,200 school districts that have filed lawsuits.”

“We have resolved this matter amicably and continue to focus on our long-standing mission to build safety features like Teen Accounts that help young people stay safe online, and give parents easy ways to support their families,” Meta spokesman Andy Stone said in a statement. YouTube spokesman José Castañeda said the school board’s objection to the company is “has been amicably resolved and our focus remains on creating age-appropriate and parent-friendly products that deliver on that promise. ” Snap spokeswoman Monique Bellamy also said they were “pleased” to resolve the matter “amicably.” TikTok did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The next trial involving substance abuse and youth health issues is expected to begin in Los Angeles County District Court in July. Bellwether’s next federal hearing is expected in January.
