The Blues coach adds a new layer of experience to the squad
Chelsea FC have stepped up their contacts with a familiar name in their new technical director Xabi Alonso in a deal that could reunite the pair of former Bundesliga stars amid reports of significant progress in talks in recent hours.
According to journalist Florian Plettenberg, “Chelsea” reached a verbal agreement with “Sunderland” midfielder Granit Xhaka on personal terms.
The former Arsenal captain appears to be close to a move to Stamford Bridge, where he will be reunited with Xabi Alonso after playing together at Bayer Leverkusen.
According to the same source, Chelsea are already in talks with Sunderland regarding a possible transfer deal and the final terms of this deal have not yet been decided.
33-year-old Xhaka joined “Sunderland” a year ago and participated in 36 matches, becoming the author of one goal and 6 assists.
The veteran leader is making his fourth World Cup appearance as he led Switzerland to official qualification for the 2026 World Cup round of 32 in the USA, Canada and Mexico.
