One Climate Change: Just Look Up

Kundig is one of many builders who build homes to withstand extreme weather conditions – and fire—which has gotten worse during this time of climate change. And he is one of those architects who proves that solid buildings don’t have to look like apartments. Kundig, the founder Olson Kundig Architects in 1986, says: “People come to us looking for homes that require little maintenance, but expect them to last for generations.” As it turns out, he adds, “The buildings themselves tend to be overcome by the great forces of nature.”

Therefore, Kundig says, “almost all of his buildings” can be considered solid. They have impressive (and difficult) habitats in Europe, Asia, Africa, and North and South America. He still hasn’t planted his flag in Antarctica. “Talk about bravery,” he muses. “This would be a fun place to make.” What about the moon or Mars? People don’t treat him the same way: “I think we have enough problems here on Earth,” says Kundig.
