Ollie Smith will wear a special Scotland jersey in memory of Scott Hastings

Scott Hastings will be remembered at Murrayfield on Saturday as Scotland host Fiji in the final game of the Nations Championship.

Kendra, a much-loved and much-decorated player, died suddenly in May at the age of 61. The tributes that followed his death spoke volumes for his reputation in the rugby world.

Warm and composed, Hastings played 65 Tests for his country, a record at the time. He wore the number 13 jersey with distinction.

Against Fiji, Ollie Smith will wear a special version of that 13 shirt. The number 13 will be done in gold and inside the number will be the names of the teams Hastings turned out for during his career as well as some of his notable achievements.

“We thought about what we could do to ensure Scott’s legacy as a Scotland player,” Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend said.

“I know there will be a build-up before the game. There will be messages for the fans and those watching on TV will pay tribute to Scott.

“For us, we’re highlighting his number, so number 13. The iconic images I have of Scott when I was a supporter is him playing in that 13 jersey against England in the 1990 Grand Slam.

“I get to play with him, but the message we want to send out there is, Scott, ‘You’ve been 13 all these years,’ so we’re going to get that number in gold and it’s going to stand out.

“I think it will be a great moment for the fans to show their appreciation before the game and see his legacy during the game.”

Hastings, along with his brother Gavin, was a Watsonian boy who went on to play for the British and Irish Lions on the victorious tour of Australia in 1989 and again in New Zealand in 1993, a tour captained by his brother.

He wore the Lions jersey a dozen times between Tests and midweek games and also made 13 appearances for the famous Barbarians.

The highlight of his career was, of course, the 1990 Grand Slam, achieved on an important day in March against England at his beloved Murrayfield.

The try-saving tackle Hastings made on Rory Underwood that day has gone down in Scottish rugby folklore. Last autumn he was inducted into the Scottish Rugby Hall of Fame as a salute to an 11-year international career.

A crowd of 50,000 is expected at Murrayfield for the Fiji Test, a significant turnout for a relatively low-key event, but an occasion that now has a huge resonance in what will be an emotional and no doubt exciting tribute to one of its favorite sons.
