Ollie Robinson, Emilio Gay, James Rew and Sonny Baker in the England Test squad

Few would doubt that Robinson’s pedigree is one of the premier pacers in the country and his competitiveness will add much-needed fire to England’s attack.

At the start of the season, he met with the England management and was given the responsibility of managing Sussex. Robinson scored a stunning century against Surrey on the road, taking 17 wickets as he took the county to three wins in five matches.

Robinson joins Josh Mlas, Gus Atkinson, Matthew Fisher and 23-year-old Baker in the pass bowling squad. Jofra Archer will not be available until the second of the three Tests in the Indian Premier League, while Bridon Carsey is recovering from a broken wrist.

Tongue was impressive during the Ashes in Nottinghamshire’s Surrey County Championship match at the weekend, where Atkinson was called upon.

Surrey’s Fisher, 28, has been called up to the Ashes squad and can add to his one Test cap against the West Indies in 2022.

Baker is highly talented but endured a difficult international debut in white-ball cricket last year. He was included after a strong start to the season against Hampshire.

Crowley’s absence was inevitable. No opener in Test history has been given as many chances at the top of the order as Crawley’s 104 innings at an average of less than 30.52.

Gay looks to be in pole position to open at Lord’s alongside Ben Duckett after impressing with three centuries for Durham earlier in the season.

If he does, Gay will become a dual international after playing three T20s for Italy in the past. He also rejected an offer from the West Indies.

Although Rew is young, he already has 12 first-class hundreds. Usually in the middle order at home, England asked him to open for Somerset. On his debut against Glamorgan in the previous Championship, he was caught for four and not out.

So it looks like Rew will have to wait his turn after the established line-up of Jacob Bethel, Joe Root, Harry Brook, captain Stokes and wicketkeeper Jamie Smith.

England conducted a review after the Ashes were hit due to poor on-field performances and off-field issues. Director of cricket Rob Key, coach McCullum and captain Stokes all kept their jobs.

The team will gather for a training camp in Loughborough on May 22, a week before the first Test.
