Oleksandr Usyk beats Rico Verhoeven: What’s next for the heavyweight division?

Moses Itauma continues to rise as the most exciting British heavyweight prospect in years.

The 21-year-old scored a stunning fifth-round stoppage win over Jermaine Franklin in March, becoming the first fighter to stop the American in 27 professional bouts.

A title shot for Itauma is getting closer, even though Usyk previously announced that he would not be able to face him.

Itauma is expected to return against a top-ranked opponent at London’s O2 Arena on August 8, with Croatia’s Filip Hrgovic currently seen as the leading option.

Hrgovic brings a strong pedigree, having won Olympic bronze in 2016. Most recently, he stopped Dave Allen in major fashion this month.

In the year It represents another important step for Itauma before he goes on to win the Dubois Wardley in 2027, although any meeting with Wardley is complicated by the fact that he and Itauma are trained by Ben Davison.

Elsewhere, veteran American Deontay Wilder is yet to announce his next move after defeating Britain’s Derek Chisora.
