Offshore of Hormuz: US fires on oil tanker as new Iran embargo begins.

The Belma, which was previously sanctioned by the United States for its alleged ties to Iran, entered the Gulf on Tuesday after passing through the Strait of Hormuz, according to maritime traffic tracking data.

It was reporting no cargo on board and last reported its location about 100 km (63 miles) southeast of Kharg Island on Thursday.

Another crude oil tanker linked to Iran diverted its route on Thursday and returned to Iranian waters in the Gulf of Oman, ship monitoring data showed.

It is not clear whether the Fuyao, which was listed in maritime traffic as carrying fuel to Pakistan, changed course to comply with the US embargo.

As part of the cease-fire deal, Washington eased decades of sanctions by granting temporary permission to sell Iranian oil and pay Tehran in US dollars.

In the coming weeks, Iran will sell oil at a price 20 percent higher than before the war, its chief negotiator, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, said.

Analysts with the United Nations Nuclear Iran (UANI) and shipping experts TankerTrackers.com, an advocacy and monitoring group, have exported at least 74 million barrels of oil since the embargo ended and restarted. UANI says this is worth more than $6bn (£4.4bn).

The United States restricted this authorization last week after Iran carried out a series of attacks on ships off the coast of Hormuz.
