Real Madrid on Friday announced the departures of women’s team stars Caroline Weir and Teresa Abilera at the end of the current season, a move that ends an important era in the history of the Real’s women’s side.
The club confirmed via an official statement on its official channels that Scottish midfielder Caroline Weir, the club’s all-time top goalscorer with 63 goals, will not continue with the club from next season, four years after joining in 2022.
Real Madrid expressed their gratitude for Weir’s commitment and exceptional performance, praising his commitment and professionalism during his time there and wishing him well in his future career.
Weir leaves the Royals with records that are difficult to break as he made 125 official appearances, scoring 63 goals to become the club’s all-time top goalscorer in addition to leading the league’s goalscoring charts, making him a striking force in the Madrid side.
In a related context, the Royals also announced the departure of Spanish midfielder Teresa Abilera, ending a career that spanned six seasons in the white shirt.
Real Madrid confirmed via their official website that Abilera will not continue with the team next season, expressing his “love and gratitude for representing the values of Real Madrid” during his six seasons with the club.
Teresa leaves the Royals after playing 170 matches and scoring 13 goals. While playing for Real Madrid, he also won the World Cup with the Spanish national team in 2023, and the UEFA Nations League title in 2024.
The club’s statement reads: “Real Madrid will always be his home and we wish him and his entire family all the best in this new phase of life.”
The departure of Weir and Abeleira is a huge loss for Real Madrid, who are losing two of the most famous stars in their recent history, as each left a legacy that will be hard to match, both in terms of statistics and impact on and off the pitch.
