“Manchester City” today, Wednesday, announced the departure of one of its most famous stars, after 9 seasons spent in the team.
Manchester City announced their star man’s departure hours after losing the Premier League title race to Arsenal after a 22-year absence.
Bernardo Silva’s contract with City expires next month and his contract has not been renewed and he is expected to leave for a new destination in the coming days.
City posted a video on their official accounts showing Silva the trophies he has won behind the club, with the club commenting: “Thank you, Bernardo.”
During his nine years at Manchester City, Bernardo won 20 trophies, including six Premier League titles, one Champions League title, three FA Cups, five League Cups, three Charity Shields, a Club World Cup and a European Super Cup winner’s medal, most recently leading the club to the 2026 FA Cup against Chelsea.
The 31-year-old, who will bid farewell to the fans at the Etihad Stadium next Sunday in his final game against Aston Villa, stressed that this trophy-laden record would not have been achieved without the unconditional support of the stands.
“I think that’s the most important thing in football,” he said of the relationship with City’s fans.
He continued. “So at the end of the day it’s about entertainment and the main thing for the footballers is that the fans, the people who go to the stadium, feel well represented, feel a part of them on the pitch.”
He continued. “And when you have that connection, when you feel, when the fans feel that win or lose, the players gave it their all on the field.”
“And when you create that connection between the players and the fans, you’re one step closer to winning… They see how we play. We are an attacking team, we play with our heart on the pitch and we always do our best.”
The Portuguese concluded. “Even last season when we were going through a very difficult time, the connection was always there and we never felt like they were going to leave us. Rather, they always stayed with us… So I would say that communication within the club is the most important thing for the success of any football team.”
