Officially… Crespo is starting a new training experience

Argentina’s Hernán Crespo has signed a contract with Mexico’s Atlas to manage the team in preparation for the start of the new domestic league (Apertura) season.

Crespo succeeds compatriot Diego Coca, who ended his association with the club earlier this month after a spell at the helm of the team’s technical staff.

Atlas confirmed, in Announcement through its official websiteCrespo was chosen because of his extensive experience and leadership personality, stating that “his leadership, experience and deep understanding of football make him the ideal choice to lead this project.”

The 51-year-old coach returns to the job just months after leaving Sao Paulo in Brazil last March.

Crespo has had many coaching experiences since retiring from football in 2012, having coached Italy’s Modena, Argentina’s Banfield and Defensa y Justicia, as well as Qatar’s Al-Duhail and UAE’s Al-Ain before his latest stop with Sao Paulo.

The Argentinian coach led Al-Duhail to a league, cup and league cup treble in the 2022-2023 season before guiding Al-Ain to the AFC Champions League title the following season.

Crespo’s name has recently been linked with coaching a number of European clubs, most notably Rayo Vallecano, Marseille, Lazio and Parma, in addition to Arab clubs led by Saudi Arabia’s Al-Ittihad and Qatar’s Al-Sadd.

Crespo is expected to make his official debut for Atlas when they host Monterrey in the opening round of the Mexican league on August 1.
