The next step after Real Madrid
English club Fulham have announced the appointment of Spaniard Alvaro Arbeloa as first team technical director on a three-season contract that will keep him in the role until the summer of 2029, in his first full experience outside Real Madrid.
Arbeloa said: In a statement to the club’s official websiteHe feels very proud to start this phase at London’s oldest club, stressing that he is aware of the great responsibility placed on his shoulders and thanking the club’s owner Shahid Khan and his deputy Tony Khan for their trust.
“I’m looking forward to playing my first game in front of the Fulham fans in the atmosphere at Craven Cottage and I’m also excited to start the pre-season with the players next week. I’m sure we’ll have a great journey together.”
For his part, Shahid Khan explained that Arbeloa convinced the club’s management during the meetings held last June, stressing that he is the most suitable candidate to lead the team, noting that the Spanish coach has great ambitions and experience that he has gained from working with the best players and coaches in the world, as well as the belief in developing young talents and presenting attacking football.
For his part, Tony Khan expressed his delight at signing Arbeloa, describing him as a coach with great intelligence and a deep understanding of football, in addition to his leadership personality and always striving for success, expressing confidence in the team’s bright future under his leadership.
Arbeloa’s appointment follows a coaching career that began at Real Madrid’s academy, where he led the youth teams and won several titles before becoming manager of Real Madrid Castilla and then taking charge of the first team following the departure of Xabi Alonso last season.
During his time with the first team, he led Real Madrid to a second-place finish in the Spanish league, and his most notable achievement was a 5-1 aggregate defeat of Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in the Champions League.
Arbeloa also has a trophy-laden playing career, having previously represented Real Madrid, Liverpool, Deportivo La Coruna and West Ham United. With Real Madrid, he won the Champions League twice, as well as the World Cup in 2010 and the European Championships in 2008 and 2012 with the Spanish national team.
