Obinna Ekezie committed to Louisville, to reclassify in 2026

Top-five high school juniors Obinna Eg has committed Louisville And plans to reclassify in 2026, he announced Sunday.

Ekezie chose the Cardinals over a final five that included Maryland, BYU, Arkansas and Kentucky.

“I chose to commit to the University of Louisville because I think it’s the best situation to develop, showcase my game and strive to win a national championship.”

Louisville has been the perceived favorite for much of the past few weeks, though Maryland — where Egji’s father played in the late 1990s before becoming a second-round pick of the Vancouver Grizzlies — stretched it. Aggie visited Louisville’s campus in late April and was impressed by coach Pat Kelsey.

“Coach Kelsey set himself apart with his detailed plan for my development, especially being able to play and develop at both the 4 and 5,” said Aggie. “His wonderful staff was completely bought into helping me reach my goals. But honestly, this visit was the highlight. Louisville felt like home from the moment I got there.”

A 7-foot outside from Southeastern Prep Academy (Florida), Aggie is ranked No. 4 in the SC Next 60 for the 2027 class. He will push for the No. 1 center ranking in the junior class and the No. 1 center ranking in the 2026 recruiting class as well.

Ekezie has strong, physical tools and finishes above the rim with strength, capable of catching and dunking lobs, screen-and-rolls or occupying the dunker spot in the half court. He possesses elite shot-blocking ability and rebounds at the rim and outside his zone. With long, quick strides, he sprints across the floor and covers ground in transition. He’s most effective in the paint and in the post-up, where his footwork and hands combine to defend defenders and secure feeds — but he’s also shown some straight-line driving ability and an outside touch.

He averaged 12.4 points, 7.8 rebounds and 1.8 blocks last season.

Ekezie is the latest addition to a super-talented Louisville rebuild. Kelsey and the Cardinals have made multiple splashes this spring, including high-level transfer commitments Flora Bidunga (Kansas) and Jackson Shelstad (Oregon) on the same day in early April. The two fellows are joined by pickups Alvaro Folguiras (Iowa), Carter Knox (Arkansas), De’Shine Montgomery (Dayton) and Gabe Dines (USC) in Cardinal’s portal class.

Once Ekezie arrives on campus, he will provide a complement at the 5-spot, offering shot-blocking and transition skills to Bidunga’s stronger game. The duo is among the best defensive duos in the country at the center position.
