The Game Boy Camera was a terrible camera even by 1998 standards when it was released. It captured 0.01434-megapixel images in only four shades of gray and images were locked onto your Game Boy unless you printed them or bought a third-party cable to extract them. But it was accessible and affordable at $90, which is also part of the appeal of Epilogue’s solution to using a camera with advanced hardware.
The GB Operator is not freebut combined with the new Flashback app and your phone is a cheaper option than devices like $240 Analogue Pocket which also works with the Game Boy Camera. The app reads information from the aging sensor of the Mitsubishi M64282FP Game Boy Camera so that the pictures you take with the accessory look the same as they would have done many years ago. But the software is better than what was offered on the original Game Boy with options to change settings such as shutter speed, gain, exposure, sharpness, tilt, and grain, plus the ability to use one of 32 different color schemes.
If you don’t have a Game Boy Camera or GB Operator, Epilogue’s Flashback app also includes a software program that takes advantage of the accessory’s capabilities. Images captured by your cell phone’s camera are processed and output as low-resolution 128 x 112-pixel images with minimal dithering and color fading. When you use the original Game Boy Camera features or the app’s features, the photos you take are saved to your phone’s Camera Roll for easy access and sharing.
