Location of US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and to supervise 41 people in the US because of this Andean hantavirus A ship collision is a common epidemic, but the risk to the public remains low, according to health officials.
This includes a group of 18 riders from a ship who are now in quarantine in Nebraska and Georgia. The agency is also monitoring travelers who returned home before the crisis and others who were exposed during travel, especially on flights where there was a problem.
“Many of the people under surveillance are considered to be at high risk, and the CDC recommends that anyone under surveillance stay at home and avoid social contact for 42 days,” David Fitter, director of the CDC’s hantavirus response, told reporters at a press conference Thursday. “We emphasize not to travel in all these groups.”
Andes virus is a type of hantavirus found in South America that can spread from person to person. Most of the time, hantavirus is spread to humans through contact with rat feces or urine. A respiratory virus, the disease can cause breathing difficulties and has a mortality rate of about 35 percent. As of Thursday, the World Health Organization has confirmed 11 cases of the Andes virus among MV passengers Hondius ship, including three deaths.
The Department of Health and Human Services confirmed to WIRED that all Americans on board Hondius every time on his journey he now returns to the US.
The CDC has legal authority to issue quarantine and isolation orders to prevent the spread of certain communicable diseases to or within the US. Fitter said Thursday that the CDC is not using that authority to monitor all 41 people who have been infected with the hantavirus.
“Our approach is based on risk and evidence,” he said. “We are working closely with passengers and our health care partners to ensure we are on the lookout and get treatment quickly if symptoms develop. Our goal is to work with them, together, to develop plans based on their situation to protect the health and safety of our passengers and the American community.”
People will be monitored for 42 days, which is how long it will take symptoms of hantavirus exposure after exposure. Symptoms begin as a cold, fever, muscle aches, and fatigue, then progress to severe shortness of breath.
