Northwest 200: Todd said he can’t ride in international road races

Davy Todd has told BBC Sport NI he is “gutted” to miss out on this year’s North West 200 International Road Race.

The chief medical officer’s assessment at the race meeting was that he was not satisfied that the Yorkshire rider had sufficiently recovered from the injuries sustained in the crash at the Daytona race in Florida in early March.

The 30-year-old suffered multiple injuries in the incident, including a broken femur, tibia, leg and nose, and underwent surgery in the US.

Two weeks ago Todd’s 8Ten Racing teammate and co-owner Peter Hickman hinted that He was optimistic The nine-time Northwest Race winner will be suited up to take his place on the grid for the race at the Triangle Circuit.

However, his hopes of participating this year have now been dashed.

“Following his injury at Daytona in March, Davey Todd underwent a medical examination by the Chief Medical Officer at the 2026 Briggs Equipment Northwest 200 today,” said a statement released by organizers Tuesday afternoon.

“Unfortunately, due to his injury, Davey was ruled out of the North West 200 this week.

“We are very disappointed that Davy will not be on the grid this year,” said race director Marvin White.

“He has enjoyed great success in the North West and a huge following who will be equally disappointed. We would all love to see him racing there but safety is paramount.”

Todd has triple-scooped in each of the past two Northwesterns and expressed his disappointment at the decision to keep him from competing.

“I’m disappointed, I’m confused. I’ve worked really hard over the last week to get fit and get back and race here in front of the fans in the North West,” Todd told BBC Sport NI.

“I rode a bike for the first time in Valencia on Thursday and I surprised myself how fast I was going and how good I felt on the bike.

“Everything was falling into place. I’m feeling stronger, healthier day by day and in a better place.”

“I’ve put everything in my power over the last eight weeks to get back on the grid and I was surprised a couple of days ago, really proud of myself that I’ve got myself back in a position where I can come here and compete again and be competitive, and not to be given the chance to say I’m disappointed.”
