North West 200: ‘Confidence’ stirs Jeremy McWilliams, 62, ahead of Triangle Circuit return

McWilliams’ globe-trotting exploits on two wheels saw him compete at the highest level of the sport in the MotoGP class, where he competed with nine-time world champion Valentino Rossi.

Since his Northwest 200 debut 14 years ago, he has totaled 13 podium finishes, including five second-place and five third-place finishes, in addition to his three Supertwin wins.

With more than a decade of experience under his belt around the Triangle circuit, McWilliams says he no longer feels burdened by the “stress” of the week and admits the environment is a key factor in his continued participation.

“Riding here on the coast, in front of the home fans, when you see a lot of people riding in the North West, how many people come through the paddock on race day, it’s jammed,” he added.

“It’s a good feeling, meeting people and chatting to them. It’s not usually the way I’ve raced in a world championship. You’re taken from the pit lane and into your garage.

“It’s a lot more open and accessible. It’s fun because you meet people you haven’t seen in years.”

“It’s a good place to be. I love racing on the North Coast. It’s a really fun race, no matter what class you ride in. It’s tough, it’s tight and it’s fun to compete and ride with guys younger than me.”
