Michael van Gerwen sealed his second Nordic Darts Masters crown as an angry Luke Humphries called out the crowd in Copenhagen for whistling that disrupted the final.
Top seed Van Gerwen had a slow start to the finals evening, as he defeated Viktor Tingstrom 6-5 in the opening match of the night and then beat Jonny Clayton 7-4.
Humphries overcame his Premier League final defeat to Luke Littler with a superb display in the 7-5 semi-final win over the world champions with a match average of 105 – which included a champagne 132 finish, hitting the bullseye twice before landing a double 16.
The final game of the night proved another high-quality top-15 contest, which first saw Humphries go 3-1 up before Van Gerwen responded with four straight legs in front.
Both players traded breaks of throws as the match went to a decider, where Humphries missed the bullseye to win, allowing Van Gerwen to finish with a double top 72 and secure an 18th PDC World Series title.
The final was marred by booing and whistling by a minority in the crowd, much to Humphries’ dismay.
“When you’re in doubles, the whistle blows. It’s frustrating,” he said ITV Sport.
“As players, it’s really because I’m here to entertain you and when you stand here you just want to play well.
“I’m here to win the title. I just want to entertain everyone. You feel down and at the end it’s hard work.
“All the players are fed up with it now.”
Van Gerwen is delighted to get his hands on another trophy after a tough run of form.
“It was a really tough game, especially at the start,” van Gerwen said. “Luke let me get away with it because he had chances to be 4-1 up, but didn’t take them and then you try to take advantage and luckily I did.”
The Dutchman continued: “It’s always good to get a win behind your name again. It gives confidence and a good feeling because I wasn’t performing well in the early rounds.
“But more importantly how I was able to keep grafting. That’s what won me today and I’m really pleased with that.”
Humphries defeated world champion Littler 7-5 in the semi-finals.
The opening quarter-final of the evening’s action saw van Gerwen fighting to end Tingstrom’s hopes when he edged a thrilling last-leg decider – a match dart alive for the Swede, who upset reigning champion Stephen Bunting on Friday night.
Clayton came through their all-Welsh showdown to beat Garwyn Price 6-3 while Littler won 6-1 against James Wade and Humphries saw off Gian van Veen in a deciding leg.
