Matt Haig, a prolific writer of titles including The Midnight Library and Reasons to Liveopening a bookstore in Brighton.
The author plans to open the shop, called Golden, by Christmas. It is located in the Seven Dials area, a part of the coastal city that currently has no bookstores.
“My belief, as someone who grew up in a town without a bookstore, is that all communities should have bookstores, because bookstores save civilization and make life more enjoyable,” the author wrote. Instagram this week, I added that the store “will be free”.
“We’re not going to push things we don’t want to push,” he said. “Only good books. Saved by me and people I trust. Mind-bending books. Books that make you cry. Banned books. Fun books. Illustrated books. Children’s books. Great books. Coolest music and art books. Books with words. Books that don’t have words. Books that don’t have words but are so beautiful. Books that are actually vinyl records. The best writers dead and alive.”
There will be an “evening ceremony”, he added. “No loose vibes. No brand names. Dogs are also welcome at the store.
Haig, who was born in Sheffield, has written more than a dozen books for adults and children, including her 2015 book, Reasons to Stay Alive, about living with anxiety.
They follow several famous authors who have established their own bookstores. Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney launched Suspicious Case in Plainville, Massachusetts; Ann Patchett opened it Parnassus Books in Nashville in 2011; George RR Martin the owner Beastly Books in Santa Fe.
