Friday’s crash involved two London-bound trains on the same line, according to East Midlands Railway (EMR), which operates both services.

On Friday, police confirmed that the driver of one of the trains died at the scene.

In a statement from Buckingham Palace, King Charles said he was “deeply saddened” by the incident and sent his “heartfelt thoughts and condolences” to the family of the deceased pilot and to those injured.

The East of England Ambulance Service said on Saturday that 11 people were injured “very seriously”, while another 32 were seriously injured and another 56 were slightly injured.

EMR chief executive Will Rogers called the accident “a very sad day for the railway community”.

“We are very sad that our driver died tragically, and several other people were injured,” he said while speaking at the scene along with other officials.

He added that the EMR “fully supports” the RAIB’s investigation.

More than 20 ambulances, emergency rescue teams and six ambulances were dispatched to the scene of the accident on Friday.

While the investigation is ongoing, officials have not said whether the signature issues were involved in the incident.
