Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has confirmed that he believes in his country’s ability to win the 2026 World Cup, stressing that “if he didn’t believe in it, he wouldn’t be here”.
Neuer explained that this will “in principle” be his last major tournament in a Germany shirt after returning to the team after retiring from international football at the end of Euro 2024.

He continued. “It would be exceptional for me to become the world champion for the second time. “If I didn’t see that this team was capable of achieving that, I wouldn’t be sitting here today.”
He noted: “It was only in the last few days that I began to understand that this could be my last match with the German national team.”
“But I didn’t think about it even during the last European Championship, so after losing to Spain in the quarter-finals after extra time, I didn’t make an immediate statement about it. I look forward, enjoy every match and don’t think about goodbyes.”
Neuer is participating in the 5th and final World Cup of his career and he said: “Fundamentally, it is clear to me that this will be my last tournament.”
He emphasized. “I don’t plan to return as a goalkeeper in the European Championship after two years, but now I don’t want to think about it.”
Referring to his secret of continuing until the age of forty and participating in the World Championship, he commented: “Good sleep, proper nutrition and lifestyle are all important. You have to be at the top of your level every 3-4 days and do everything to get there.”
Neuer returned to the German national team after announcing his international retirement after Euro 2024.
