The Netherlands took a giant step towards the World Cup’s knockout stages with a 5-1 win over Sweden in Group F, inspired by a brilliant duo from Brian Broby and Cody Gakpo.
Ronald Koeman’s side, drawn with Japan in their first match, produced a ruthless attacking display to move to four points and put qualification firmly in their grasp. Sweden, who beat Tunisia in their opener, could not cope with the Dutch firepower and got a late consolation from Anthony Elanga.
Brobie seized his opportunity on the biggest stage, asserting himself with two close-range finishes to put the Oranje in complete control. The Sunderland striker’s movement and physical presence caused the Swede constant problems.
Any hopes of a Swedish comeback were extinguished shortly after the break when Gakpo took center stage.
The Liverpool forward continued his outstanding World Cup record by striking twice in succession to turn an already comfortable lead into a rout. His double took him to five World Cup group-stage goals for the Netherlands, equaling Robin van Persie as the country’s most prolific goalscorer in the group stage of the competition.
Elanga eventually pulled one back for Sweden, but that proved to be nothing more than a consolation, as Crescencio Summerville wrapped things up for the Dutch on the stroke of half-time.
5: Goal! Broughie rewarded Koeman’s faith by tapping in the opener from close range.
17: Goal! Brobbey again slides home a deadly double from a cross from the right.
27: Sweden boss Graham Potter uses a hydration break to change his system.
45+1: Goal out! Gustaf Lagerbiel headed home a set-piece for Sweden but was flagged for offside.
47: Goal! There’s Gakpo to sweep in another dangerous cross from the right.
54: Goal! This time cutting down the left, Gakpo found a clinical finish to double his tally.
59: Goal! Alexander Issac sends Virgil van Dijk behind with a volley and he finishes in ruthless fashion.
89: Goal! Summerville capped a great performance off the bench with his second goal of the tournament.
